Words

You know what bugs me... the word ridiculous.

I was watching TV and a commercial came on talking about these HD sunglasses that are supposed to make it easy to read outside in the sunlight (how can you make a book look "HD"? That's another thing I don't understand). The commercial said something like this, "Tired of trying to read outside, wearing sunglasses but holding up reading glasses too? It's ridiculous...". The word ridiculous itself doesn't bug me, it's how people say it. It seems that SO many people say "RE-diculous". Why? There is no "RE" to it. The word ridiculous comes from the word ridicule. To ridicule something is to make fun of it. Maybe it's something annoying, so you would like to scoff at that particular item. Thus, you are ridiculing that item, and it is "ridiculous" or worthy of your "ridicule". On that happy note, please make sure to pronounce that word correctly, for my sanity's sake!

If you don't think that this post is ridiculous, feel free to comment.

Wow. I'm pretty particular about things, but never realized ridiculous is not pronounced REdiculous. It'll take some getting used to, but I could try, for your sake, Don Bud. :)
